It starts today.
Actually, it's more of a "lifestyle" thing than a diet.
Almost 6 years ago, in March 2003, I finally decided I didn't want to be fat anymore. So I decided to try the Atkins diet.
I was told to be patient. And diligent. And not to cheat. So I was...and I didn't.
Then after about 2 weeks of nothing, I finally lost a couple pounds. And by that point, I'd broken my "addictions"...to sugar, bread, carbs in general.
I realized that I could sacrifice bread and sugar if I could eat bacon, eggs, hamburgers (bunless), cheese, olives, SlimJims, nuts, and ranch dressing. Those are just a few of my faves.
And the longer I ate only these kinds of things, the less hungry I was, and I didn't crave the carbs anymore.
After 9 months of steel-like willpower, I had lost almost 60 pounds. And the best part was that I kept it off for over 4 years!
I went back to dessert occasionally. I also had to start drinking beer again! But, if I started to see those pounds creep back, I'd just get strict again.
Now, you might say..."How can all that FAT be good for you?"
Truth is, I'm not exactly sure. But I was supervised by my doctor, and she was okay with me doing it. In fact, she was thrilled that over the first year, my cholesterol dropped from about 225 to 175!!! The bad went down and the good went up!
So....here we go again! Darren has "signed on" with me again...which makes it much easier to get started. The only obstacle for me is the frustration I'll feel when he loses about 3 pounds for every 1 pound I lose! :)
Wish me luck...only 40 pounds to go!
This was me in 2006. I know I'll never have the bikini body again (Caroline has assured that), but I can't wait to NOT be afraid to show my legs again!

To all the other "d-day"ers out there...What are you doing to lose weight this year?

Good luck with that! I tried the Atkins diet years ago when it seemed like everyone was doing it and I got sick as a dog! My sugar levels bottomed out and I went into shock. I guess it doesn't work for everyone.
ReplyDeleteGood luck! I know you can do it again. This is the first year I can ever remember not starting out with a diet. Not because I don't need to, but because of my IVF cycle. I'll just work to lose it after I deliver my baby! ;)
ReplyDeleteI've been doing weight watchers since Amelia was about 8 weeks old (she's a little over 4 months old now). I did WW after my first was born, and I lost the 50 lbs (!!!) of pregnancy weight PLUS another 20 on top of that! I've lost about 30 this time so far, and I have another 20 to go.
ReplyDeleteGood luck! I'm sure you'll do great. I started my dieting Dec 26 after a month long eating marathon. So far...not going so well. Just wanna lose 10 pounds but it seems utterly impossible. I can't do the carb thing b/c I am not a big meat eater. Lots of salad for me!
ReplyDeleteKeep us posted on your progress!
hey, the atkins thing works wonders doesn't it. The first time I did it...was after baby #2 and it was like what you described. It practically fell off with the no sugar thing. I will say that after baby #3 and the dreaded over 30 age, Atkins didn't seem to work, so if you have trouble...try low calories..... just my advice for the day. Good luck
ReplyDeleteJen, you're going to do great on the diet. You truly are the most disciplined person I've ever seen when it comes to dieting. No kidding. I myself did actually step foot in the gym yesterday for 1 whole hour...of course, Dan was threatening to cancel my membership, but whatever motivates you, right? My goal is 2 days a week for one month, then 3 days, then 4 days. We'll see...
ReplyDeleteHere's my plan once lil Jonah decides to show his face. I follow Sugarbusters. Its pretty close to Atkins, but you can have whole wheat bread, pasta, and rice. What you said about it being tough, then you don't even crave it anymore is so true! Then I like to run too, so I just hit the road, but I know it will be harder once I have a baby's schedule to work around! Good Luck, I know you'll do great!
